Transporting Adoptable Animals
The Humane Relocation Program was initiated by PROD in 2004 after Hood River County lost their contract with the Wasco County Shelter (Home At Last), which for many years had enabled HRC to house their impounded stray canines. The generosity of the Southwest Washington Humane Society in Vancouver will always be appreciated as they agreed to accept adoptable Hood River County strays that had not been claimed by their owners. In the following two and a half years our volunteers transported 134 dogs that passed their behavior evaluations, and were ultimately adopted from the Vancouver facility.

Ribbon cutting at the Ross & Daphne Hukari Animal Shelter in Odell
On May 17, 2007 two and a half years after the first announcement of a very generous donation to the county, Camille Hukari, daughter of Daphne and Ross, cut the ribbon celebrating the official opening of the first animal shelter in Hood River County. Our volunteers were told that the large donation from Daphne was inspired by their dog, Kord, which the family adopted through a placement program operated by PROD in the mid 1990's. It was said that Daphne's good experience with our organization led her to contribute cash for the shelter. We so appreciate the generosity of the Hukari family! Since there is now a local shelter and no need to transport dogs elsewhere, the Humane Relocation Program was terminated with Hood River County in December of 2007. Presently, the volunteers that operate the Adopt-A-Dog Program at the Hukari Shelter have been very successful in placing many unclaimed stray canines in caring homes. They are doing a wonderful job of meeting the needs of the dogs at the shelter in order to keep them both mentally and physically healthy. PROD encourages local participation in their program. Please contact AAD Volunteer Coordinator Judy Dutcher at 541-490-6327 or theBarkingZ@gorge.net if you wish to volunteer.
