Until recently, PROD had the resources necessary to manage a foster care / adoption program for owner released and stray dogs. While we no longer have those resources available to us, we are still helping stray dogs find homes. |
Transporting Adoptable Animals
Today, instead of providing an adoption service ourselves, we are transporting unclaimed adoptable Hood River County canines to the Humane Society in Vancouver, Washington. The Humane Society for Southwest Washington has been very kind and generous in offering to work with us.
To date, we understand that all 131 of our dogs have been adopted.
Odell Animal Shelter
Ribbon Cutting at the Ross & Daphne Hukari Family Shelter in Odell
On May 17, 2007 two and a half years after the first announcement of a very generous donation to the county, Camille Hukari, daughter of Daphne and Ross, cut the ribbon celebrating the official opening of the first animal shelter in Hood River County. In the past our volunteers were told that the large donation from Daphne Hukari was inspired by their dog, Kord, which the family adopted through a placement program operated by PROD in the mid 1990's. It was said that Daphne's good experience with our organization led her to contribute cash for the shelter. We so appreciate the generosity of the Hukari family!
Recently the Hood River County Board of Commissioners established and approved an advisory committee comprised of Susan Kent, Linda Adams, Phil Chadwick, Anita Grinich, Cindy Stephens, Judy Dutcher, and David Stauffacher to develop guidelines for a county dog adoption program at the shelter. This "Adopt-A-Dog" program will be limited in scope using the assistance of Hood River area volunteers to re-home adoptable canines.
In addition to offering to contribute to the welfare of these impounded canines in many ways, PROD will continue our Humane Relocation Program transporting those dogs that have not been adopted locally, to the Vancouver shelter for new placement. We thank the kind folks at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington for their continued support over the last two and a half years!
Until a phone number is available at the shelter, Susan Kent can be reached at 541-354-6212 if anyone would like to volunteer to work with the dogs.
